Objetives: To evaluate the effectiveness of a group intervention in family communication skills to improve family functionality, alcohol consumption pattern and self-esteem in adolescents and their family units.
Design: Experimental intervention study with ante/post evaluation.
Setting: Community care in the Val Miñor area.
Participants: 10 participants (5 family units) recruited by pragmatic sampling among 3rd ESO students of three high schools belonging to the Val Miñor area.
Methods: 6 sessions were carried out during the months of November 2023 to February 2024; given by professionals in prevention, in the CS Val Miñor.
The participants anonymously filled in the questionnaires with the different scales (FF-SIL, AUDIT, CEEA and Rosenberg), on which a descriptive and bivariate analysis was performed with the statistical software R studio version 4.2.2.
Results: The sample of adolescents was made up of 60% males, aged between 13 and 14 years; while in the group of families, 100% were women aged between 39 and 69 years.
An improvement was obtained in the FF-SIL questionnaire score, and therefore in the consideration of "functional family", both in the group of families (from 80% to 100%) and in the group of adolescents (from 40% to 80%).
Conclusions: Despite the small sample size and the lack of a medium- to long-term effectiveness evaluation, the results obtained in the present study seem promising. Consequently, the need to incorporate universal prevention programs for alcohol consumption, applied in the school setting and from an early age (13-14 years), is emphasized.
